Golan accuses Netanyahu of attempting a coup as coalition talks continue
By Jewish Life Staff, . Jewish Life.
Yair Golan, leader of Israel's Democrats party, published a stark warning on X/Twitter on Friday, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of attempting to seize power by force. Israel is at a "critical juncture," Golan wrote, and Netanyahu is "in a panic, trying to stage a coup, and seize power by force," according to The Jerusalem Post.
The security warning
Golan directed particular criticism at the Shin Bet, Israel's internal security agency, and its director, David Zini. The agency, Golan claimed, has "fallen into the hands of the Netanyahu family" and now serves Netanyahu rather than the state.
"The holy of holies of Israel's security is in the hands of those who serve Netanyahu rather than the state," Golan wrote, as quoted by The Jerusalem Post. He also pointed to what he described as a deepening crisis with the United States, cuts to military aid funds, and a widening rift with the Democratic Party, calling these "a real danger to Israel and its security."
Coalition negotiations
Despite the sharp tone of his security warnings, Golan said he sees reason for optimism in ongoing efforts to assemble a coalition government, which he called a "change government."
"There is serious work taking place every day to turn the election results into a 'change government,'" Golan wrote, acknowledging difficulties but describing "real progress." He said his bloc holds a majority and called the moment a "historic responsibility."
"We promised you we would form a government and send Netanyahu home, and to save Israel's democracy and security," Golan wrote, according to The Jerusalem Post. "We are on it. We have a majority, an opportunity, and a historic responsibility to not miss it."
